NMI Approved Electricity Meters for Accurate and Compliant Billing
What is an NMI Meter and Why It Matters
An NMI approved meter ensures that every unit of electricity you’re billed for meets Australia’s National Measurement Institute (NMI) standards for accuracy and performance. These meters undergo rigorous pattern approval testing to confirm they measure energy correctly under real-world conditions, from variable loads to environmental stress. Whether you’re an energy retailer, building manager, or installer, choosing an NMI compliant electricity meter guarantees your data meets the strict national requirements for billing, verification, and compliance.
LPA Energy Group supports Wattwatchers clients seeking integrated smart metering and data management solutions.
Our systems connect seamlessly with Wattwatchers devices for accurate sub-metering, load monitoring, and energy reporting.
Existing Wattwatchers users can expand capabilities through WideSky Energy & Power Management or compatible CET and EDMI meters, creating end-to-end visibility across building and industrial sites.

How/where do I get the NMI number?
NMI stands for National Meter Identifier. It’s a unique number for the electricity connection at your address. You can get this from your electrical energy bill.
NMI M 6-1 Active-Energy Electricity meters for unique NMI numbers for billing purposes, please see clause 7.8.2 (C) AEMC . The NMI number comes from your energy retailer and is based around the address where the energy will be supplied.
What is the NMI number on the side of the meter?
This is the National Measurements pattern approval number. Pattern approval is where an instrument is tested against national or international standards. This determines the measurement accuracy of the instrument and whether the instrument retains this accuracy under a range of environmental and operating conditions. If the instrument complies with the pattern approval process, a certificate of approval will be issued. NMI meters are approved for billing purposes.
